Coalition to March on the DNC To Have Presser Ahead of Appeal Hearing for Its Denied Protest Permit

Who: Coalition to March on the DNC

What: Press conference and rally ahead of hearing for denied permit

Where: 400 W. Superior Street, Chicago, IL

When: Monday, March 18, 8:00 AM

Why: On behalf of the March on DNC Coalition, two organizations within the coalition, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and Anti-War Committee Chicago (AWC), applied for permits to march within sight and sound of the Democratic National Convention on August 19 and August 22 respectively. Once again, the city denied the permits, and the two organizations have since appealed those denials. The coalition and its supporters will hold a press conference to discuss the fight for the permits on March 18 at 8:00 AM. Immediately after the press conference at 9 AM, the hearing for the August 22 permit will take place. And at 1 PM, the hearing for the August 19 permit will take place.

“We reject the permit denials because we have the right to voice the demands of the people within sight and sound of the DNC,” said Liz Rathburn, member of SDS. “Ultimately, we’re demanding a permit to march as a gesture of good faith that the police will not introduce violence into our family friendly protest. But regardless of if we get a permit or not, we intend to march on the DNC to, first and foremost, demand an end to US funding for Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and to also bring forward demands of working and oppressed people in this country – demands that the Democrats have failed to meet.”

The March on the DNC Coalition is a coalition of organizations who fight for the rights and liberation of oppressed people and against the exploitation of workers. Beginning on August 19th 2024, the coalition will march on the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to bring the people's agenda within sight and sound of the Democratic Party leadership.
